How To Remove A Parameter From SPFILE

Since we can not edit the SPFILE file with a normal text editor, as can be vi, edit, notepad and others. The way to do this is with the following command;

alter system reset <parameter>

Now there are parameters that can not be changed in “hot”, so you have to go it alone in the spfile, otherwise the following error will occur;

SQL> alter system reset remote_os_authent scope=both sid='*';
alter system reset remote_os_authent scope=both sid='*'
*
ERROR at line 1:
ORA-32029: resetting with SCOPE=MEMORY or SCOPE=BOTH is currently not supported

This is the correct way;

SQL> alter system reset remote_os_authent scope=spfile sid='*';

System altered.

A simple way to verify that we have successfully deleted would be rerun the command, in this case as it is a RAC, we specifying the instance 3.

SQL>  alter system reset remote_os_authent scope=spfile sid='TVD3';
 alter system reset remote_os_authent scope=spfile sid='TVD3'
*
ERROR at line 1:
ORA-32010: cannot find entry to delete in SPFILE
