When Started The Database?

There are times when we need to know what date  started the database, the most common way is to go to alert.log file and look forthe last startup, that is the date. Another method that I use is to look at the v$session, looking for the date when demons processes got connect (background like PMON, LMON, CKPT) to the database. The below query should always return us the date of the Connection PMON process. One could filter more including eg TYPE = ‘BACKGROUND’ or PROGRAM like ‘% PMON%’;

 SELECT
  TO_CHAR (LOGON_TIME,'DD.MON.YYYY HH24:MI:SS') AS "STARTED"
FROM V$SESSION
WHERE
  ROWNUM <= 1 and
  SERIAL# = 1
